Want a good value?  Do the public track meets!  Accurate courses, perfect traffic control, and very modestly priced!

Schroff is right (I can't believe I just said that).  As a runner that races for competition, I have learned I am in the minority.  I want an accurate course, accurate timing, good competition, and maybe a bottle of water afterwords.  Unfortunately most of the racing community wants more frills.  Look at the Firecracker 5K as an example.  Up until recently, that race was poorly organized from a racers standpoint.  They had no idea where the start / finish was, no idea of the exact distance, no pins for the bibs one year.......  But, they always had a huge turnout because the food spread is enormous.

A good compromise would be to let the runner decide if he/she wants a t-shirt and adjust the cost accordingly.  I might try to do that for my race this year.

I am all in favor of a lower entry fee if a runner does not want a t-shirt.  The Carl Sandburg College race does this, as do a couple of others, and I would like to see this option at more races.  My t-shirt collection was extensive until I started purging it last year.  I still appreciate receiving a nice t-shirt, but I would prefer to have the option.

I am RDing a trail race this weekend......the entry was $45 and includes a super awesome jacket along with the entry fee.  I had an option for a cheaper entry with no jacket and had about 5 people pre-register go with the cheaper option and no jacket....everyone else wanted one.  the no-jacket option was $20 dollars less....I could have reduced it more, in hind sight, but I wanted to make sure I still had enough money to actually get stuff for the race after i wrote the check for almost $2500 in jackets.

I see no problem have a gear-less cheaper option....i suppose that would be one way to make everyone happy.....except trail races the courses are never well measured Wink

I am by no stretch of the imagination a competitive runner, but I want the same things: accurately measured course (unless it is a trail race), accurate timing and people who run my pace who don't mind pushing each other.

I'll even bring my own water.  Wink

I'll consider a no-shirt option for the Delavan 10k.  The shirts will be micro fiber though so I wouldn't expect to see a lot of no-takers.  I'm currently looking at $20 race fee with a $5 race day charge.  I think that is pretty reasonable especially for a 10k.  I really enjoy getting the high tech shirts and wear them all the time.  The cotton ones end up as rags or paint shirts usually.

OK I know I'm not local, but my kids and I have run several races in Illinois when visiting family. After 3 pages, I am surprised no one has brought this up, so I will. Since my 2 boys usually run the race as well, if the cost of the race is more than $20, it about rules us out. Especially when the t-shirts are all adult sizes that my kids won't fit into for another 8-10 years. The no t-shirt option is great, and we take advantage of it whenever it is offered (great job on this FOLEPI the last couple years, although your sweatshirts were always great and worn more than just about any other race shirt I own!). Several races in my part of the country also have a reduced price (and sometimes free) for kids, or have a family rate, so that is of great benefit to us.

thats good thinking too...I think I'll also add a lower price for younger people as well as the no shirt option.

I would probably run more races if there were a no-shirt option at a reduced cost.  I've got my (albeit small) collection of t-shirts to make up for my college T's that have died, and would rather put my budget toward more races, given the chance.

I can definitely understand if a family wanted to do any amount of races how it would be tight.

I mentioned this suggestion to a race organizer. He brought up a good point too. For a smaller race, offering a no shirt option can reduce the number of shirts below the minimum order number for a discount and wind up making the shirts too expensive.

I'd hope there's some way around that, because the no shirt option seems very appealing to me too. I also have tons of cotton race t-shirts I never ever wear.

I don't mind the cost of race when the t-shirt size I receive is the t-shirt I ordered.  So far, my experience in Peoria has been a great in this department!  I've run way too many races, paid $35-60 or more for races where they'd given out all the small t-shirts by the time I picked up my packet/shirt.  This is very frustrating, especially now that there are so many technical shirts--I'm not going to sleep in a large polyester shirt.

So, to the race organizers of Peoria, keep giving out the right size shirts, and I'll be happy!!
