Quote from Michael Helgeson on Mar 11th, 2010, 2:16pm:Schroff is right (I can't believe I just said that). As a runner that races for competition, I have learned I am in the minority. I want an accurate course, accurate timing, good competition, and maybe a bottle of water afterwords. Unfortunately most of the racing community wants more frills. Look at the Firecracker 5K as an example. Up until recently, that race was poorly organized from a racers standpoint. They had no idea where the start / finish was, no idea of the exact distance, no pins for the bibs one year....... But, they always had a huge turnout because the food spread is enormous.
A good compromise would be to let the runner decide if he/she wants a t-shirt and adjust the cost accordingly. I might try to do that for my race this year.
I am RDing a trail race this weekend......the entry was $45 and includes a super awesome jacket along with the entry fee. I had an option for a cheaper entry with no jacket and had about 5 people pre-register go with the cheaper option and no jacket....everyone else wanted one. the no-jacket option was $20 dollars less....I could have reduced it more, in hind sight, but I wanted to make sure I still had enough money to actually get stuff for the race after i wrote the check for almost $2500 in jackets.
I see no problem have a gear-less cheaper option....i suppose that would be one way to make everyone happy.....except trail races the courses are never well measured
